Well, this certainly makes me very happy. Now I can go away and listen to it on my ipod when I'm out and about. Thanks.

A massive improvement in some cases. Anyway thank for the copy, time to tear it apart. I wonder what the BPM is?

Well, sounds roughly about the same as the old one to me.

Do you want a "clean" version, or will the version with sound effects (lightning strikes, etc.) do?
If you want a clean version, I'll have to edit one from the closing.

There's an opening version (with sound effects) for you. Bit of a rush job; had to get the clean scream and trail off from the closing. Let me know if it's not good enough and I'll redo it tomorrow.

That's perfect, thank you Danny.
Now you mention it, it would be interesting to hear the opening theme without the sound effects (not sure it would be as dramatic though), but I know you'll be doing that at some stage anyway!
This was exactly what I wanted, thanks again,
Dave

Hi everyone.
I read with interest Danny's analysis of Murray Gold's new theme, and despite being a complete novice, I appreciate the reservations expressed therein, from a fan point of view more than anything.
What particularly occured to me was that for Gold's initial 2005 theme – applied to the pre-series trailers – he had already toyed with the bassline, making it have less of a clear drive forward, even reversing it to a point! I agree with Danny that this driving sound is what's expected for the bassline, but I also liked the variation at the time and was sorry that Gold decided to retain the sampled version for the series itself.
One of my favourite themes is the David Arnold version used (until recently) for the Big Finish Audios with Paul McGann. Again, Arnold's bassline created more of an ambience than a sense of direction and purpose, but with it, a more dangerous and unpredictable sound.
As with Arnold's theme in 2000, I wasn't sure about Gold's new version a few weeks ago. But, after hearing it in good quality I consider it far and away superior to the versions of the last five years. What I love is the kind of "skitter effect" he's worked in, which I think generates a real eeriness, woefully lacking since the series came back. I'm also fine with the downplayed bassline, and I would previously have agreed that a strong bassline was the place to begin, but in this case it doesn't seem to matter. The total product breaks into new territory.
I collect Doctor Who themes, and always look forward to hearing new ones, but Delia Derbyshire and Peter Howell cast very long shadows. So many of the pieces on Whomix evoke their work, and I think it's unfortunate that sometimes, homages take the place of innovation.
My feeling is that it's time to see the back of sampling the existing themes, and for musicians to create their own personal interpretations, making their own sounds in the spirit of Derbyshire and Howell, but not slaves to their legacy. I think the Doctor Who theme is very, very special and its different versions mean a lot to people, but to approach the theme from scratch, that's got to be exciting for a musician.
